![]() ![]() On the one hand, within the socialist movement there were the advocates of a revolutionary course of action. While generally there was agreement on the necessity of socializing the means of production, there were always diverging opinions on how to proceed. 1 Both are egalitarian in motivation, at least in theory, 2 and both have essentially the same ultimate goal: the abolishment of capitalism as a social system based on private ownership and the establishment of a new society, characterized by brotherly solidarity and the eradication of scarcity a society in which everyone is paid “according to his needs.”įrom the very beginnings of the socialist movement in the mid-nineteenth century, though, there have been conflicting ideas on the methods best suited for achieving these goals. ![]() ![]() ![]() Much more so than any theoretical argument, it has been the disappointing experience with Russian-type socialism which has led to a constant decline in the popularity of orthodox Marxist socialism and has spurred the emergence and development of modern social-democratic socialism.īoth types of socialism, to be sure, derive from the same ideological sources. ![]()
